Brief Overview

Vanier started life as Canada's smallest city, sized at just 2.79 km2! Originally known as the village of Eastview, it was renamed Vanier in 1969 in honour of former Governor General – Georges-Philéas Vanier. Bilingual Vanier has about 17,000 residents and is centred around Montreal Road, between the Rideau River and the Aviation Parkway.

To the east of Vanier is Gloucester, another bilingual community with just over 100,000 residents, surrounded by Greenbelt parklands. Gloucester was incorporated as a township in 1850 and became a city in 1981. It extends east of Blair Road and encompasses the upscale neighbourhoods of Rothwell Heights and Beacon Hill, home to three toboggan hills.

Orléans is a 10-minute drive east from Gloucester. Both were cities in their own right, prior to the amalgamation of Ottawa in 2001. Most of Orléans is situated between Innes Road and the Ottawa River. This self-contained community of 100,000 has its own shopping areas and plenty of parklands.
