Happy 149th birthday Canada! On July 1, 1867, Canada became its own independent country. Today is a day to celebrate our country’s birth and all of its accomplishments since this great country was established!

There are a ton of reason to love Canada, but here are a few interesting facts that will surely make you love it even more!

1. Lake area

Canada has more lake area than any other country in the world. In fact, it has 563 lakes that are larger than 100 square kilometers!

One of the most popular lakes, Dow’s lake, is a small manmade lake located on the Rideau Canal our capital region, Ottawa. The Rideau Canal is famous for it’s beautiful walkways, and skating in the winter months!

Dow’s lake also has a marina where visitors can canoe, kayak and paddleboat in the summer months.

Bonus: Dow’s lake is only a few moments away from Dow’s Lake Towers apartments in Ottawa!

Canada has the longest coastline in the world! In fact, it’s 202,080km in length.

If you were to walk the entire coastline—without breaks to eat, drink or sleep—it would take you 4 and-a-half years to complete.

Better get started!

3. Endless Forests

Our country is known for its wildlife, but did you know that Canada takes up an entire 10% of the world’s total forest cover? Specifically, there is 396.9 million hectares of forest and other wooded land!

In Ottawa, you can walk through The National Capital Greenbelt, which has over 150 kilometers of trails connecting to Trans Canada Trail, Rideau Trail and Capital Pathway network.

The Rideau Trail is the perfect way to spend an afternoon enjoying all the nature Canada has to offer—and it’s only a 10-minute drive from Greenbank Towers!
