Ottawa’s winters get a bad rap for being really cold. There’s no denying that winter in Ottawa for the uninitiated can come as quite of a shock. But for those used to “weathering” out the winter, this season in Ottawa can be a lot of fun – especially this year.

Here’s our 5 reasons why this winter in Ottawa is going to be great!

1) Winterlude

The annual festival is one of the bigger highlights of the winter. This year from January 29th to February 15th, Winterlude takes the city by storm in a celebration of winter. For over two weeks the city celebrates the coldest season with skating on the Rideau Canal, ice sculpture making and North America’s largest snow playground. One of the most popular aspects of Winterlude is the Snowflake Kingdom, across the river in Gatineau. Winterlude attracts nearly 2 million people each year to the city.

2) The Rideau Canal

Skating on the Canal is a staple of Winterlude, but it’s also a must-do for Ottawans even after Winterlude is over. The canal typically opens in January and closes in March. Skating on the rink is completely free with food stands, change huts and skate rentals all across the 7.8 km long rink. The canal starts downtown and extends all the way to Dow's Lake.

3) Cross Country Skiing

You would think you would have to travel far outside the city to do some cross country skiing,  but in Ottawa, you don’t have to! Most trails are free to use. The most prolific trail is just across the Ottawa River in Gatineau Park. There is over 200 km of trails that are groomed and maintained stretching through and around Ottawa.

4) Downhill Skiing

The area surrounding Ottawa promotes some of the best skiing around. Challenging and beginner hills are all within quick driving distance from the downtown. Camp Fortune is one of the better known hills in the area. It’s just a 15 minute drive from downtown Ottawa to the slopes!

5) The Ottawa Senators

We’re now into the heart of the hockey season, and the Ottawa Senators are battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Win or lose it’s always exciting to watch the Sens play. The “pesky Sens” always pull something out of their sleeve and make it happen. Best of all it always seems like the Senators have a chance (unlike the Leafs).

There’s so much to do and see in Ottawa this winter, that you may just forget how cold it is.

Winter is also the perfect time to move into a new apartment. Put your trust in Paramount - we can find you the right apartment in Ottawa!
