Don’t be a victim of the winter blues! Turn your apartment into a cozy winter hideaway with some simple yet creative hacks:

Reverse Your Ceiling Fan

When running at low speeds ceiling fans pull cooler air upwards while spreading warm air towards the top of the room and downwards. This is as simple as flipping the switch on your ceiling fan and warms the room by reversing the cooling, wind-chill effect of a fan.

Get Cooking

Winter is generally a busy time of year! Save yourself an evening of headaches by choosing meals that you can prepare ahead of time. This is the perfect time of year to opt for warmer, heartier meals. Save time by using a crockpot or slow cooker to prepare your favourite meals overnight or while you’re at work for the day - an option that also fills your home with extra warmth and delicious smells.

Stock Up On Warm Beverages

You guessed it! One of the best ways to prepare your home for winter is ensuring that your cupboards are filled with the essential hand and heartwarming beverages. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are perfect options for warming up after a long day at work or fun day outside in the snow.

Use Draft Stoppers

Used to eliminate cold draught and slow heat loss, draft stoppers are placed in the bottom crack of doors and windows. These can be purchased in-store or easily made at home using old fabric and dried beans or lentils. Using draft stoppers around your apartment can be a key factor in reducing your heating bill throughout the coldest months of the year.

Buy Indoor Plants

The lack of greenery and life during winter can put a damper on anyone’s mood. You don’t have to worry! Keep your green-thumb active throughout the winter by purchasing the perfect indoor plants for around your apartment. Some of the best options to survive the cold are Aloe, Chinese Evergreen, and Peace Lily plants. These can serve as décor as well as add humidity to the dry air that may be taking over your apartment.

Emergency Kit

Cold weather and winter storms are likely to cause power outages and various other issues within your apartment. Be prepared for the worst by assembling a kit of items that you may find necessary in an emergency situation. This could include flashlights, matches or lighters, batteries, candles, extra blankets, non-perishable food items, bottled water, small change, small hand tools, and toiletries.

Bonus Tip: Keep yourself protected in any situation by preparing an extra Emergency Kit for your car!
