Don’t feel glum about cooler weather and rainy days! Enjoy all that fall has to offer by transitioning your apartment into a warm and cozy refuge with a few festive tips:

Fill The Air With Fall Scents

Fall is in the air, and not just outdoors. Bring warm fall scents into your home this season with candles from home goods stores or cosmetics shops. Capture the essence of autumn by burning anything spiced, vibrant, earthy, and warm. This could include pumpkin pie, flannel, roasted marshmallow, and apple cider. Another great way to make your apartment smell like fall is to start seasonal baking. Throwing some ginger cookies, cinnamon rolls or pumpkin pie in the oven is a great way to warm your apartment, treat your taste buds, and fill your apartment with autumnal aromas. Similarly, fall is a busy time so why not facilitate dinner preparation and enjoy delicious smells by letting warm meals like chili, stew, and soup simmer throughout the day in your crockpot.

Keep Up With Cleaning

Before closing your windows indefinitely and trapping in any dust and dirt that may have been tracked in over the summer, make sure to deep clean as many areas possible. Focus on spaces that may be overlooked in the cooler months like the balcony, the foyer, window sills, and the kitchen. Take this opportunity to clear out summer items and replace them with seasonally appropriate ones. This will ensure that your space stays clutter-free and organized.

Set Out Fall Décor

Now that summer is over, its time to transition your décor from bright and fresh to warm and festive. One of the easiest ways to do this is to start introducing autumnal colours like red, yellow, purple, black, orange, pink, magenta and dark blues. An inexpensive way to start introducing these colours into your apartment is by arranging throw pillows and blankets throughout your space. This can be beneficial as these pieces of décor also increase the comfort and warmth of your living spaces. For more ornate decorations, head to your local home décor or craft stores and pick up some pumpkins, fall coloured flowers, and earth toned statement pieces.

Regulate Your Apartment's Temperature

When transitioning from summer to fall, make sure that your apartment stays cozy and comfortable, even on the coolest nights. First, check all of your windows to ensure that they are properly sealed and weather resistant. If they are demonstrating any issues, be sure to contact your landlord as soon as possible – it is easier to fix or replace windows when the weather is mild. Next, ensure that your apartment’s heating system is functional. In some cases, you are able to regulate the temperate yourself from inside your apartment, other times it is the responsibility of your landlord. Keep in mind that there are regulations that property owners must follow regarding the temperature of their buildings. Ottawa Bylaw states that, “between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. air temperature in the centre of each reasonably ventilated room of must not be less than 16.67 degrees Celsius and between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. an air temperature in the centre of each reasonably ventilated room of must not be less than 20 degrees Celsius”.

It's time for pumpkins, hot apple cider, warm sweaters, and cozy apartments! Welcome autumn into your home without hesitation and make the most of this wonderful season.
