It’s time to trade in your bathing suit and sunscreen for a backpack and a pencils! Don’t let the start of the school year bring stress and frustration. Implement these back-to-school preparation tools to get your apartment ready for the upcoming season:

Establish a Routine

After a summer of long days and late nights, it can take some time to transition back into a consistent schedule. In order to avoid early morning meltdowns, missed alarm clocks, and chaos, children should gradually go to bed earlier and get up earlier in the last few weeks of vacation. Facilitate early nights and earlier mornings by eating meals earlier in the evening and reducing the amount of screen time after dinner. Additionally, make your days less stressful by starting to plan meals for the week – take note of evening activities and how long you will have to prepare dinner, as well as choosing meals that use similar ingredients to save time and money. You can also get yourself and your kids in the habit of picking your clothes out the night before to reduce time getting ready in the morning.

Clean and Declutter

A big factor in keeping focused and organized throughout the year is keeping your apartment clutter free. This will open up space in your home and in your mind and make tasks seem less overwhelming. Having a place for everything, on a child-friendly scale, means that your little ones will know where to find what they need, and where to put thing that they aren’t using. An organized environment also has fewer distractions, allowing children to focus on the task at hand. When back-to-school shopping, start by taking inventory before purchasing new items, getting rid of old or damaged supplies and clothing, and make a list of only what you really need. Try looking for sales and discount stores to save money when purchasing supplies.

Create a Distraction Free Work Area

In order to keep your children focused and interested in completing their homework, establish a designated work area. Ensure that it is away from screens and high traffic areas where there could be possible distractions. Keep the area fully equipped with necessary supplies, proper lighting and any documents that they may need. Additionally, create a centralized calendar for the entire family. This will help you keep track of after-school activities, school programs and deadlines. You can also equip this area with hooks, cubbies and shelves for storage of necessary outdoor clothing, documents and supplies to be easily accessible and easily stored.

Back-to-school time doesn’t have to be stressful and chaotic. Keep your home feeling as relaxed as it did in the summer with a few simple preparation hacks. Don’t forget to work together as a family to help these tools work as effectively as possible.
