We’ve all experienced the stress of looking for a new apartment. What’s the best deal? Where’s the best location? Does this have everything I need?

Answering the fundamental questions can be tough, and often we feel unorganized throughout a process that should be exciting – not a hassle!

Here are some ways you can make your apartment search easier:

1. Determine affordability

Before you start hunting for apartments, it’s important to determine what you can comfortably afford. Set a budget that suits your needs, and stick to it while shopping for your new home.

Currently, you can rent a 1-bedroom apartment in The Voyageur for $969/month, or a 2-bedroom apartment for $1199/month. Bonus: heat and hot water are included in these prices!

2. Try to lower your costs

If you’re on a tight budget but need a new apartment, getting a roommate is an excellent way to cut your costs. Splitting rent and utilities can save you large amounts of money while renting.

Another option to cut expenses is to ensure you are living in an area that’s close to where you need to go – therefor lowering the cost of transportation.

If you’re a student, Riverview Place is affordable, close to downtown, and only a 15-minute walk to the University of Ottawa!

3. Explore your options

Renting an apartment is a big commitment. Before you jump into signing a long-term lease, make sure you know what’s out there and available to you. This includes checking with different apartment management companies to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.

4. Ask around

No matter how much research you put into an apartment, there is no better way to know the culture of a building than by living in it! Ask other tenants what their favourite parts of the apartments are.

Additionally, bringing a friend you trust to view the apartment with you gives an extra set of eyes and another honest opinion.

5. Come with questions

When you meet with a landlord to view an apartment, make sure you have your list of questions ready. Be prepared with questions about price, terms and conditions, and any other details that are important to your comfort.

If there is something you couldn't find in your personal research, do not hesitate to ask your landlord before signing a lease!
