It’s the most wonderful time of year in Canada’s Capital and what better way to spend it than getting your skate on at one of Ottawa’s many outdoor rinks! We’ve created a list of some of the city’s most popular rinks for you to enjoy:
All are welcome to experience the one-of-a-kind scenic skate that takes place through the Gatineau forest. The 3-km long route takes approximately 45 minutes to complete – if you don’t stop to take in the surroundings. Throughout your skate, you will get to see charming winter trees, twinkling Christmas lights, and potentially even experience the local wildlife. On-site is a heated area in which skaters are welcome to take a lace-up their skates and take a rest. Don’t forget to pack your hats, mitts, and thermos of hot chocolate!
Children 6 and Up: $9:00
Children 5 and Under: Free!
If you’re looking for a low-cost option for skating in Ottawa, the centrally located Rink of Dreams is perfect for you! Open 7 days a week from 6:00am-11:00 pm, the small man-made rink offers a family-friendly experience and is equipped with change rooms, rest-tables, music, lighting, and food trucks on the premises. They also offer daily skate rentals and sharpening. Don’t forget to visit Winterlude to see some ice sculptures and enjoy hot chocolate, or Rideau Centre for some holiday shopping – both located right across from the rink!
Calling all Centretown Skaters! This rink, located between Centretown and Old Ottawa South, offers public skating from 6:00am-11:00pm, 7 days a week. As it is located in the heart of Lansdowne, it is surrounded by a number of popular restaurants and shops – perfect for a post-skate hot chocolate or date night dinner! If you’re planning on visiting this rink, keep in mind that they do not offer skate rentals or sharpening, so be sure to bring your own!
This winter, be sure to check out one of Ottawa’s main tourist attractions, the Rideau Canal! Located in the downtown core, the entirety of this 7.8km skate way is maintained throughout the winter and is open daily to the public (weather permitting). Many heated change huts and food stations (serving classics such as poutine, beavertails, and hot chocolate) can be located at checkpoints along the rink. If you are an experienced skater, feel free to take the canal to work or school. If not, don’t worry, skates and skate aids (tailored sleds) can be rented alone the canal for your enjoyment!
For the West-enders in Ottawa, check out Ben Franklin Place this winter for an enjoyable outdoor skating experience. This rink, while family-friendly, is unsupervised and requests that children under seven be supervised by an adult. This accessible rink offers plenty of options for public parking and is located next to one of Ottawa’s public libraries – the perfect place to warm-up and relax with a good book after an afternoon of skating. The rink is open to the public from 11:00am-8:00pm, 7 days a week.
