Spring into warmer weather with these apartment maintenance hacks:

Clean Out Fridge

After a winter of takeout and holiday leftovers, your fridge is bound to lose some of its sparkle and shine. Make room for fresh produce, and take the stress out of grocery shopping by refreshing your refrigerator. Start by taking everything out of your fridge – this includes condiments and mystery containers. Dispose of all expired items and organize contents according to how they will be stored. Next, take out removable shelving, drawers, and door inserts. Due to their awkward shape, they can be difficult to clean. If the weather permits, bring them outdoors and use the hose with dish soap and a sponge. Alternatively, these items can be cleaned in the bathtub. Once these pieces have been cleaned and dried, thoroughly clean the inside of your fridge with a food-safe cleaner like vinegar, baking soda, or dish soap mixed with water.

Bonus Tip: In order to ensure that you get all of the nooks and crannies, make sure you choose the best cleaning tool for each section. Items like toothbrushes, rags, and sponges are all great options.

Dust Light Bulbs and Fixtures

One of the most anticipated parts of spring is the brightness that it brings to your apartment. It’s a little known fact that cleaning your light bulbs can make your room 20% brighter - using the same amount of electricity! Before cleaning your bulbs, make sure that your lights are completely off before cleaning bulbs or fixtures in order to avoid electric shocks. Carefully wipe bulbs with a dry rag or duster, wash glass coverings with some soap and water, and grab a lint roller to clean fabric lampshades.

Check Smoke Detectors

While you’re working to make your apartment clean and tidy, why not take extra steps to also ensure its safety? Changing the batteries in your smoke detectors should be done regularly, and spring cleaning gives you the perfect opportunity to do so. Cleaning your smoke detectors and changing their batteries will, at most, but it could literally save your life if a fire happens in your home. Start by running tests to make sure that your alarms are functioning properly by pressing the test button, before and after the new batteries are installed. Wipe the dust off, and use a spray can of air or a vacuum to blow out any dust inside.

Please Note: It is important to carefully read and follow manufacturers instructions before making any changes to your smoke detector. If you’re unsure how to access this information, ask your landlord, superintendent, or property manager.

Deep Clean Rugs and Carpets

Rugs and carpets can accumulate a fair degree of dirt and debris that go unnoticed trapped in their fibers. Spring is the best time to tackle your rugs and carpet as you can open the windows for long periods of time so that they thoroughly dry after a good deep cleaning. Start by picking everything up off of the surface that you are about to clean and thoroughly vacuuming loose debris. If a rug is reversible, vacuum both sides. This removes dirt and debris that can wear out your rug prematurely. Be sure to brush out pet hair that may have been left behind by the vacuum. This can be done by using a stiff brush in the direction of the nap of the rug. Next, treat any visible stains using your favorite removal agent. Finally, use a carpet cleaner to deep clean and disinfect your rugs to keep them looking their best and reduce the amount of dust and bacteria in your home.

Bonus Tip: Foot traffic and sun can cause unnecessary damage to area rugs. Avoid this by turning them once or twice a year to even out the wear.
