The start of a new year brings with it the desire to better ourselves, make positive life changes, and clear our world of clutter. Eliminating waste from your everyday life is an effective and simple way to clear up your apartment, as well as your conscience. Here are a few tips to help you follow through on your “green” goals for 2018:

Use Cloth Bags

These can be a great option for not only going to the grocery store, but for storing produce and keeping it fresh in your fridge. They are affordable, reusable and clear up tons of cupboard space filled with all of those pesky plastic bags.

Buy in Bulk

Shopping in bulk is a sure-fire way to reduce or eliminate packaging related waste in your kitchen. Larger quantities means fewer packages and often bulk shopping allows you to bring your own reusable containers and bags for storing items.

Bonus: Bulk shopping is also a segway to healthier eating as many bulk items are natural, whole food options!

Repurpose Empty Jars

We all know the feeling - rinsing out an empty sauce jar and not wanting to throw it out, while having no real use for it. You can, however, use these glass jars to store bulk food items purchased a local grocery store. They keep items fresh, allow you to easily see every item in your cupboard and most importantly are free!

Use Glass Containers

Glass food containers are the number one option for storing leftovers and packing lunches for many reasons. Glass containers facilitate organizing your fridge and eliminating food waste as they make seeing what is inside quick and easy. They also reduce the waste from plastic containers as they are longer lasting and easily recyclable.

Toss the Paper Towel

(Figuratively of Course)

Use dishtowels, or even cut up old clothing as a great alternative for paper towel. This not only cuts down on waste, but also on cost. Reusing them is as simple as throwing them in with a load of laundry.

Bonus: Replacing paper for cloth is also a useful swap for napkins.

No Straw, No Problem

An environmentally and health conscious decision that you can make in your kitchen, is eliminating the plastic straws. Not only do single use straws contain the harmful chemical BPA but the production can release disruptive chemicals into the atmosphere. Substitute plastic straws for ones made of bamboo, metal or glass.

Don’t wait to convert your kitchen into a waste-free zone. Give these tips a try and you can proud of your environmentally responsible apartment. Good luck!
